Chiropractor for sciatica

What a chiropractor can and can't do for sciatica, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.

What the evidence says

Sciatica is pain that runs from the lower back down the leg along the sciatic nerve, often from a disc pressing on a nerve root. Chiropractors commonly treat it with manipulation, mobilization and exercise. Evidence for manipulation in sciatica is more limited than for general low back pain, so a good chiropractor will set a short trial period and re-check your progress.

See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:

Numbness in the groin or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control (possible cauda equina syndrome: go to an emergency room), or worsening leg weakness.

What happens at the first visit

Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
