Chiropractor during pregnancy
What a chiropractor can and can't do for pregnancy, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.
What the evidence says
Back and pelvic pain are common in pregnancy. Many chiropractors adapt their techniques with special tables and positioning. Always tell your obstetrician or midwife before starting chiropractic care, and ask the chiropractor about their prenatal training.
See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:
Vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leaking, or reduced baby movement: contact your maternity provider straight away.
What happens at the first visit
Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
Questions to ask
- How often do you treat pregnancy?
- How many visits do you expect, and when will we re-check progress?
- What will each visit cost, and do you bill my insurance?
- What exercises can I do at home?
