Chiropractor for a herniated disc
What a chiropractor can and can't do for herniated disc, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.
What the evidence says
A herniated (slipped) disc happens when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer and may irritate a nerve. Many people improve with time and conservative care. If you have imaging, bring it to your first visit, and ask how the chiropractor will adapt treatment to the disc level involved.
See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:
Progressive weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area: get emergency care.
What happens at the first visit
Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
Questions to ask
- How often do you treat herniated disc?
- How many visits do you expect, and when will we re-check progress?
- What will each visit cost, and do you bill my insurance?
- What exercises can I do at home?
