Chiropractor for headaches
What a chiropractor can and can't do for headaches & migraines, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.
What the evidence says
Some headaches start in the neck (cervicogenic headaches). NCCIH reports that spinal manipulation may help some people with this type of headache, while evidence for migraine is limited (NCCIH).
See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:
The worst headache of your life, a headache with fever and stiff neck, confusion, or a headache after a head injury.
What happens at the first visit
Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
Questions to ask
- How often do you treat headaches & migraines?
- How many visits do you expect, and when will we re-check progress?
- What will each visit cost, and do you bill my insurance?
- What exercises can I do at home?
