Chiropractor after a car accident
What a chiropractor can and can't do for auto accident & whiplash, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.
What the evidence says
Whiplash is a neck injury from rapid back-and-forth movement, common in rear-end collisions. After any crash, get checked by a medical doctor or urgent care first to rule out fractures and head injury. Who pays for chiropractic care afterwards depends on your state's auto insurance system. Each city page on ChiroCenter.com explains whether that state is no-fault or at-fault, based on the Insurance Information Institute.
See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:
Loss of consciousness, confusion, severe neck pain, numbness or tingling in the arms. Call 911.
What happens at the first visit
Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
Questions to ask
- How often do you treat auto accident & whiplash?
- How many visits do you expect, and when will we re-check progress?
- What will each visit cost, and do you bill my insurance?
- What exercises can I do at home?
